Better Wheels than Heels Part II

It’s been a long time in coming, but because the fans have requested it, here is the second half of my top five Turtle vehicles!  Previously I discussed both the Foot Knucklehead and the strangest of all Turtles conveyances, Cuddley the Cowlick, a time and space transcending severed cow’s head.  Well, it is going to be pretty hard to top that, so I probably shouldn’t even try.  Although the next three vehicles obviously can’t be as wacky and creative as ‘ol Cuddley, they are pretty awesome in their own right, so, without further ado, let’s get to:

3) The Neutrino’s Hover Car: It is fairly indicative of the bizarre and wonderful world of the TMNT that some of their allies from the early episodes of the cartoon are a group of exiled teenagers from Dimension-X that inexplicably resemble, both in speech and costume, a sci-fi version of hot-rodding greasers from the 50’s.  These Neutrinos apparently make up part of the population of Dimension-X, along with sentient walking rock piles and ambulatory blobs of brain-matter.  Likelihood: Pretty slim.  While this contraption could probably be skoped together, I don’t have any real plans to intoduce the Neutrinos, who were a lot cooler when I was a kid than they are now

2) The Party Wagon: The first few episodes of the cartoon had the Turtles hoofing it around Manhattan, and obviously that wasn’t going to work too well. However, it’s the brilliant and ridiculously resourceful Donatello to soup up the van that the green teens sort-of-kind-of stole from Baxter Stockman.   I love how the Turtles unabashedly just steal all of Baxter’s stuff since, after all, he’s evil and doesn’t really need it anyway.  Also, you ever wonder where exactly Don found the hi-tech weaponry bristling from the van?  One way or the other, it’s hard to deny that the Party Wagon, A.K.A. the Turtle Van is a pretty awesome conveyance.  Dubious ownership and thematic Turtle paint job included, this is, without a doubt, the definitive Turtle vehicle, but despite that, it’s only number two on my list!  Likelihood: Fair.  While it’s far from certain, it is possible that something could be skoped together for the van, perhaps based on Val’s Iron Hide van mesh.

1) The Turtle Blimp: That’s right, my number one Turtle vehicle, and in many ways, a great synecdoche for all of the wonderful wackiness and adventure that was at the heart of the old 80’s ‘toon, is the Turtle Blimp.  I mean, what other show would have its heroes ride to the rescue in a giant, incredibly vulnerable, and slow-moving conveyance.  Forget the Batmobile.  Forget the Black Beauty.  Nothing says riding in style like a giant inflatable balloon!  As a kid the blimp seemed so incredibly unique, and it really was.  You have to wonder though, where the heck did they store that thing in the sewers?  Well, no matter.  For my money, nothing says Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like the Turtle Blimp!  Likelihood: Good.  I would REALLY love to use this flying bastion of Turtle Power in the mod, and there is a very talented fellow trying to figure it out for me.

Well, that’s it, the much belated top three Turtles vehicles according to your happy host.  I hope that someone enjoys this, and keep your eyes open for some more Turtle adventures latter this year!

Turtles Fight With Honor!

Howdy folks!  I just finished a full version of my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mod.  I had previously released a mini-mod of sorts, but this release will have almost the entire first story arc included, along with a whole passel of TMNT characters, including fan favorites (and personal favorites) Bebop and Rocksteady, but also including Krang and the Fly!

This mod has 9, count them, 9 missions, which will take our half-shelled-heroes from their first encounter with the Foot Clan up to their discovery of a strange and sinister secret hidden below the streets of New York!  Along the way you’ll take command of the green teens as they battle the deadly Foot Clan, face the mechanical menace of Baxter Stockman’s Mousers, struggle against the mutated might of Bebop and Rocksteady, and even cross blades with the mysterious Shredder!

Krang and Baxter aren’t featured as opponents in the campaign itself yet, but they are both included, and you can play as or against them in the Dangeroom if you want to test their metal!

This mod also features the first contribution to the FF community by newcomer Adam Winters.  He has really increased the quality and comprehensiveness of this mod by creating three new voice packs with samples pulled from the original Turtles cartoon.  He’s created packs for Splinter, April, and Shredder, bringing the memorable and excellent voice work of that classic show to life in Freedom Force, and bringing a lot more personality to their respective characters within the game.

We are also lucky enough to get some custom mission music from the multi-talented ow_tiobe_sb!  Now we have some music made especially for the levels of this mod.

So, what are you waiting for?  Take a walk down memory lane, and see if you can keep from smiling when you load this mod and hear a familiar song on the main menu.  Take some time to remember why you loved the Turtles way back when, and why you should definitely still love them now!

Here’s a quick PATCH for some missing textures and an FX.  Just drop this folder into your FFvTTR directory and overwrite all.  (You only needed this if you downloaded the mod before 08/30/11.)

Shell-Tastic Previews

Howdy folks!  We’ve had a pretty quiet few weeks here on the Greylands, but I have not been idle.  I’ve been hard at work on Marvel Adventures, but with the new semester starting and several missions and a good deal of work still to do, I decided that it was time to change tacks, which brought me to the TMNT mod sitting almost finished on my hard-drive.  I just recently got a beautiful and shiny new Splinter skin from the ever talented Daglob, who deserves a lot of our gratitude for everything he’s contributed to this mod!  Receiving this skin gave me pretty much everything I needed to release the finished set of seven missions that I’ve been sitting on for quite some time.  However, a new development has convinced me to add two more to that number, which will bring us almost up to the end of the first story arc.  That even, for those who have been following, was the multi-talented Cmdrkoeing agreeing to make, and then making with lightning speed, a skope of the Technodrome!

So, to make a long story short, I decided that I’d use my limited time to go ahead and get a project ready for release, and the good news for you Turtle fans is that the TMNT mod was already pretty close, so it made the cut!  Look for a full release coming soon, and in the meantime I thought I’d do a series of previews, teasing a few of the upcoming missions!

Below you’ll find some snapshots from the third mission of the campaign, where Raphael meets a personal favorite of mine, Casey Jones!

These two get off to a somewhat inauspicious beginning…

Okay, very inauspicious.

What, you’ve never seen a four foot tall humanoid turtle who knows ninjitsu?

However, it isn’t long before these two are brought together by their mutual love of senseless violence…erm, justice, I mean justice!

These punks have no idea what they’re in for…

Casey’s at the bat!

Well folks, I hope you enjoyed this brief preview.  Keep checking back throughout this week to see more, and look out for the full release sometime at the end of the week!

Better Wheels than Heels

I’ve talked about the Ninja Turtles characters that I’d like to see realized in Freedom Force, but the characters themselves were only part of what created the Turtlemania craze that shaped (twisted?) so many young lives.  In fact, the Playmates toy line and the cartoon itself introduced a number of vehicles that were every bit as wacky and unique as the cast itself, thereby ensuring that they would make an unholy profit from the kids of the 80’s, but also creating a world of even greater depth and color.

I’ve discussed in a few different places how much I’d like to bring some of the Turtles vehicles flying, driving, or floating onto the computer screen in my mod, and today begins another countdown of my top five vehicles.  They’d all have some roll to play in my Turtles campaign, and although their integration would provide a number of challenges, they would certainly make the game itself more inclusive and exciting.

5) The Foot Knucklehead: This giant mechanical spider has boxing gloves on the ends of its metal appendages….for some reason.  I don’t know why, but the simplicity of this design and the way it so totally captures the feel of the Foot clan appeals to me.  It showed up in the cartoon, the comics, and the Playmates toy line.  I think it would be a rather nice way to up the Foot’s firepower, while still sticking to the slightly goofy nature of the Turtles’ world.  Likelihood: Fair. There exists a mechanical spider mesh, and even a skope of someone sitting on its back.  If someone is willing to slap a Foot Soldier on there and skin it, we’re in business.

4) Cudley the Cowlick: Remember the disembodied, time and space transcending cow head that I mentioned the other day?  Well, believe it or not (and really, when we’re talking about marketing the Ninja Turtles, what ISN’T believable), he was once planned as a vehicle/playset for a proposed Mutanimals spin-off.  I suppose it’s just a love of the divine wackiness that pervaded the original cartoon and plenty of the Archie run, but aside from my nostalgic soft-spot for this character/conveyance, he would just be so…unique for a video game incarnation of the Turtles.  No other game that I know of includes giant, space-worthy bovine brain buckets.  Likelihood: Almost Impossible. Not only can I not really imagine anyone wanting to do this one, I’m not even sure HOW it could be done without a custom mesh…and let’s face it, that ain’t happening.

The Runners Up

Well, you’ve seen my top fifteen (’cause I couldn’t bring myself do to do just a top ten), but believe it or not, there were several that didn’t make the  cut.  There were a few characters that I really agonized over, and the final choices were pretty tough.  If I had infinite time and resources, all of these guys would find their way into Freedom Force, but unfortunately such is not the case.  Prepare to meet, in no particular order, the also-rans:

Wrestling Turtles: Another story arc from the Archie comics had the fab four whisked away to an intergalactic wrestling show by a giant, disembodied, floating cow head (I’m really not kidding).  The story itself was so over the top and unapologetically bizarre that it was charming.  The idea of the Turtles having to compete in some strange, alien contest of skill and courage is hardly a unique one.  I believe it shows up in just about all of their incarnations, but I liked the way that the Archie series really embraced the tropes of the wrestling shows that they were parodying.  The Turtles got strange new costumes, battled bizarre, gimmicky foes, and generally were very similar to your average episode of your average wrestling show.  Perhaps its just the guilty pleasure of watching those things during one of their goofiest stages, but something about this adventure appealed to me.  I think it would have been great fun to try to put together a set of missions where you have to engage in wrestling matches with various foes, though it would have taken a lot of work on my part.

Sarnath and Quark: This pair of aliens, one blind, one a big, spikey, dog-like-thing, were another neat feature of the Archie comics.  In the cartoon, the Turtles had come across an alien artifact of great power called the “Eye of Sarnath.”  This object was left on Earth by an alien, but the eponymous “Sarnath” was never seen.  In the Archie series, he shows up, and he’s pissed.  It turns out that the eye is an actual eye, of sorts, for the cybernetic Sarnath.  We have the usual heroic misunderstanding, but then an interesting and tragic story is kicked off.  I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read the issues in question, but I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘ol Sarnath and his spikey seeing-eye dog.

Hothead: An ancient dragon spirit empowering a modern firefighter, this character was not only very cool as a toy, but also hot stuff (I couldn’t resist the pun.  I’m so, so sorry…) in the comics.  His apperances in the Archie comics were part of a pretty good series of story arcs which took the Turtles all across the world.  His role in the series culminated with an awesome showdown with an eastern demon.  His size changing would make him an interesting opponent for Krang on the city-crushing scale, but he’d really be too powerful to be recruitable.

Alright folks, that’s it for those that coulda’ been a contender, but tomorrow we’ll have something new, but still TMNT related.
